Responding to the wildfires: How your support is saving lives

This summer, Greece has faced one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in recent history. Since June, more than 1 million hectares have burned across the EU, the highest total since records began, with Greece among the hardest hit. Thousands of people have been evacuated, vast areas of land destroyed, and countless animals have been left injured, displaced, or fighting to survive.

With your help, we have so far distributed €6,000 in emergency support to organisations working tirelessly on the frontlines of this crisis:

  • €3,500 to ANIMA, a wildlife rescue organisation providing care for wild animals burned or displaced by the fires. From birds with singed feathers to hedgehogs suffering from smoke inhalation, ANIMA’s team has been working around the clock to save lives.
  • €1,500 to Save Your Hood, whose volunteers have been on the ground in fire-stricken areas, rescuing animals, delivering supplies, and offering immediate relief in devastated communities.
  • €1,000 to Arcadia Animal Welfare, where our own veterinarian Elisa Geskou and her team recently treated four sheep rescued from Patra. The animals were suffering burns, dehydration and smoke inhalation. One ewe, later named Flora, was close to death, but thanks to urgent care, she began to recover.

The Aftermath

While many of the largest fires are now under control, the crisis is far from over. Vast areas of land have been destroyed, leaving fragile ecosystems struggling to recover. Surviving animals still face dehydration, hunger, and untreated injuries, and rescuers are continuing to search for survivors in the burned landscapes.

That’s why our work, and your support, remains so vital in the weeks and months ahead. We are committed to standing alongside our partner organisations in the wake of this devastation, ensuring animals receive the urgent and long-term care they need.

Petition Against Hunting

As Greece’s ecosystems struggle to heal, another threat looms: the start of the hunting season. Wildlife populations already decimated by fire risk further collapse if hunting continues as usual.

That’s why we are joining environmental organisations across Greece in calling for a temporary suspension of hunting, including a proposed five-year ban on the island of Chios. Giving nature the chance to recover is essential if biodiversity is to be preserved after this summer’s catastrophic losses.

Thank-you

None of this would be possible without you. From immediate rescue and veterinary care to wildlife recovery and long-term advocacy, every step we’ve taken has been powered by your compassion and generosity.

Together, we are not only saving individual lives, but also giving hope for the recovery of entire communities of animals in the aftermath of the fires.
