Bringing comfort to Karpathos’ equines

On the 27th of May, our farrier Tasos Skyllas happened to be visiting the island of Karpathos, the second largest island in the Greek Dodecanese archipelago (after Rhodes). We took this opportunity in the Equine Care Programme, to arrange a short farriery service to the island’s elderly working donkeys, that would certainly benefit from a professional hoof trimming, which they lack in this remote island.

Sophia Hiras, president of the local welfare group Animal Welfare Karpathos, a dedicated volunteer-run organisation that’s been rescuing, treating, and advocating for animals on the island for over 20 years, guided Tasos around the villages of Pigadia and Avlona, where he provided hoof care to 8 equines (donkeys and mules).

Some of them had slightly long hooves, and showed visible relief after their trims, walking more naturally and comfortably. Others received hoof balancing, which not only improved their immediate comfort but will also help prevent long-term issues of lameness. Their owners were grateful for the care and pleased to see their animals moving with greater ease and without pain.

We’re proud to have supported these working or retired animals through collaboration with the local welfare organisation and are looking forward to return next year with a full team to provide comprehensive treatment.
