I am often asked why Animal Action Greece is needed?
The answer is personal.
Long before I became CEO of Animal Action Greece, as a child I visited Greece (and other countries) with my family. I loved animals, but I often saw things that upset me-stray dogs/cats struggling to survive, animals without access to veterinary care, hobbled horses and donkeys, and situations where neglect seemed to go unnoticed. I felt helpless.
That feeling stayed with me.
It inspired me to dedicate my career to animal welfare and eventually become an RSPCA Inspector. In the UK, I was fortunate to work within a system where trained inspectors, welfare legislation, rescue organisations, veterinary services and enforcement agencies work together to protect animals. When animals are suffering, there are established pathways to intervene.
But Greece is different.
There is no equivalent network of RSPCA Inspectors covering the country. While there are dedicated animal welfare organisations, passionate volunteers and improving legislation, the infrastructure and resources available to protect animals are not yet at the same level. Too many animals still depend on local charities and individuals stepping in where support is limited.
That is why Animal Action Greece matters.
We are working to create long-term change, not just short-term rescue. Through educational programmes, we are helping future generations understand responsible animal care. Through sterilisation projects, we are preventing the suffering caused by uncontrolled populations of stray animals. Through partnerships with local welfare groups, veterinarians, municipalities and the police, we are helping strengthen animal protection across Greece.
Every step brings us closer to a future where animals receive the protection they deserve.
The reality is that many people who visit Greece see the same things I saw as a child. They feel upset, concerned and often powerless to help. Supporting Animal Action Greece is a way to turn those feelings into action.
Although we are a UK charity, our connection to Greece is deep and longstanding. Many of our supporters’ care about Greece, visit regularly or have been moved by the animals they have seen there. By working in partnership with local communities, welfare groups, vets and authorities, we can help provide practical support where it is needed most-improving animal welfare while also supporting the people who care for them.
Together, we can help create a future where fewer animals suffer, where communities have the knowledge and resources they need, and where stronger systems exist to protect vulnerable animals.
I know from experience that one person can feel powerless. But I also know that when people come together, change becomes possible.
