On the occasion of April 4th, World Stray Animals Day, first-grade students of the Secondary School of Filiatra, in Messinia, participated in a dedicated educational initiative, held on the last school day before Easter holidays.
The initiative featured an interactive presentation focusing on animal welfare, stray animals and responsible pet ownership. The activity was carried out, following an invitation by the Teachers’ Association, by Elisa Geskou, veterinarian and Coordinator of the Animal Action Greece Equine Care Programme.
During the presentation, students were introduced to the living conditions of stray animals and explored the primary causes of the issue, including abandonment and the lack of sterilization. In addition, they were informed about the current Greek legal framework and practical approaches to the management and protection of stray animals, such as microchipping, sterilization, adoption, proper care and collaboration with relevant authorities.
Particular emphasis was placed on responsible pet ownership, highlighting both the physical and emotional needs of animals.
The students watched relevant audiovisual material, and at the end, they participated in a multiple-choice quiz as a form of self-assessment.
Their participation was active and meaningful: through questions and discussion, they shared personal experiences and developed reflections, demonstrating strong interest and sensitivity.
Through this activity, values such as respect, responsibility and empathy towards all forms of life were cultivated.
We warmly thank the students and teaching staff for their excellent cooperation and look forward to future collaborations on similar initiatives.
Protecting animals is a shared responsibility.
